Permit to Re-Enroll

In the event you are not enrolled, on an approved leave of absence, or voluntarily discontinued by the last Friday in October (for Fall semesters) or March (for Spring semesters) you are automatically deactivated by the Registrar's Office. During this time, your KU ID is no longer active and access to all University services, including Enroll & Pay, is disabled.

If you were actively enrolled in a degree-seeking program, but your ID has been deactivated for non-enrollment, you are eligible to return to active status via the Permit to Re-Enroll, provided that you return within one academic year. Once returned to active status, all Registrar deadlines for enrollment or late enrollment, found on the KU Academic Calendar, apply.

The permit to re-enroll form is not available if you:

  • were dismissed from a program at KU
  • were voluntarily discontinued from a graduate program
  • are currently on an approved leave of absence
  • completed the graduate degree program
  • most recently enrolled as a non-degree seeking graduate student

If you were actively enrolled in a degree-seeking program and have not enrolled for four or more consecutive semesters(including summers) without an approved leave of absence, you are no longer eligible to use the Permit to Re-Enroll form and must reapply for admission to your program (see example timelines below).

You should note that time spent deactivated for non-enrollment does count against a your total time to degree. Only time away on approved leave of absence or after voluntary discontinuance will "stop the clock" in regard to the time allowed to complete the degree. If you wish to leave your program, you must take steps to do so officially via the voluntary discontinue process or requesting a leave of absence.

To verify whether you qualify to return via the Permit to Re-Enroll based on your last date of active enrollment or approved leave of absence, contact your department's graduate support staff member.
